Chapter 1 — The Burning Chakram The first thing Taiga noticed about Valkyrie Combat Academy was the crater. It was enormous. A massive circular hole sat directly in front of the academy gates, surrounded by cracked stone and still-smoking rubble. Taiga stopped walking. “…Is that normal?” A student passing by glanced at the crater. “Pretty much.” “Pretty much?!” The student shrugged. “It’s combat school.” Taiga looked up at the academy. Three enormous towers rose into the clouds, connected by bridges. Training arenas surrounded the main building, and students were already fighting everywhere—some with swords, some with spears, some using strange supernatural abilities. A boy launched a wave of lightning across an arena. A girl dodged it and punched the ground, sending stone spikes toward him. Taiga smiled. “So this is where I belong.” He reached behind his back. Attached to his belt was his weapon. A single Chakram. The circular weapon looked almost ordinary at first. Black metal. Razor-sharp edges. A small red symbol carved into its center. But Taiga’s Chakram wasn’t ordinary. It was bound to his ability: 🔥 Flame Manipulation Taiga could create and control fire through the Chakram. The more he moved, the hotter the weapon became. And when he threw it… The Chakram became a spinning wheel of flame. Taiga walked through the academy gates. Immediately, he felt eyes on him. “New student?” “What’s his weapon?” “A Chakram?” “That’s weird.” Taiga ignored them. Then— BOOM! A flaming spear slammed into the ground directly in front of him. Taiga stopped. A tall student stood twenty meters away. Red hair. Black combat uniform. A massive spear covered in flames resting on his shoulder. He grinned. “You’re blocking the path.” Taiga looked at the spear. Then at the student. “There’s an entire road around me.” The student’s grin disappeared. “…You got attitude.” Taiga smiled. “Maybe.” The student raised his spear. “Then let’s see if you can back it up.” Several students immediately gathered around them. “Already?” “On his first day?” “This is gonna be good.” Taiga slowly removed the Chakram from his belt. SHING! A small flame appeared along its edge. The crowd went silent. The red-haired student laughed. “Fire against fire?” Taiga spun the Chakram around his finger. “Looks like it.” The instructor supervising the nearby training arena noticed the confrontation. Instead of stopping them, he smiled. “Interesting.” He raised one hand. “Begin.” The spear fighter charged. BOOM! Fire exploded beneath his feet, launching him forward. Taiga barely reacted. The spear swung toward his head. WHOOSH! Taiga ducked. The spear passed above him. He immediately threw the Chakram. FWOOOOSH! The Chakram transformed into a blazing red wheel. It spun through the air toward the spear fighter. He blocked it. CLANG! The Chakram bounced away. “Too slow!” The spear fighter charged again. Taiga suddenly pulled his hand backward. The Chakram changed direction. The flaming weapon curved through the air. The crowd gasped. “It can turn?!” The Chakram flew directly toward the fighter’s back. He turned too late. BOOM! The impact sent him sliding across the ground. Taiga caught the Chakram. But the opponent stood back up. His flames suddenly became much larger. “You’re good.” He lowered his stance. “But I’m not losing to some first-year.” Taiga’s eyes narrowed. The flames around his Chakram intensified. “Good.” He stepped forward. “Because I wasn’t planning on losing either.” The two fighters charged. Fire collided with fire. BOOOOOOM! A massive explosion swallowed the arena. Students screamed and jumped backward. When the smoke cleared— Both fighters were still standing. Blood dripped from Taiga’s forehead. The spear fighter’s uniform was torn. Neither moved. Then the academy instructor walked between them. “Enough.” He looked at Taiga. “What’s your name?” Taiga wiped the blood from his forehead. “Taiga.” The instructor looked at the burning Chakram. “Taiga…” A faint smile appeared on his face. “Welcome to Valkyrie Combat Academy.” The academy bell suddenly rang. DONG! Every student turned toward the main tower. A giant screen appeared above the academy courtyard. FIRST-YEAR COMBAT ASSESSMENT BEGINS TOMORROW The crowd erupted. Taiga stared at the screen. Tomorrow? Already? The instructor walked past him. “Get some rest.” Taiga looked at his Chakram. A small flame danced across its edge. He smiled. “Tomorrow sounds fun.” But high above the academy… Someone was watching him. A mysterious student stood on the roof, staring down at Taiga. Beside him rested an enormous weapon.
