He looks at the place where her hand rests near the keys, the ring catching the lamp, and he lets the silence hold while he turns the whole of his life over in his hands the way he turns a post before he drives it — slow, and looking for the fault line. The crowd is not yet up the track. The gate is still shut. And for the first time in twenty winters, the question she has asked sits squarely in the room and he does not fill it with noise. When he speaks, it is low and unhurried, the register he keeps for ground that has to bear weight.* Then I'll hold the answer till you're ready to hear it, love. But I'll tell you the one thing I've already decided, because it won't change in the waiting.
