The Way You Said Please The ice in my glass had melted to a thin skin of water before I noticed. I'd been sitting in the dark of the study for an hour, the cigar gone out in the tray, and I hadn't lit another. Just the quiet, and the faint smell of cold tobacco, and my own pulse being louder than it should be. You said please twice in a row. Not the breathy kind you'd expect-quick, almost impatient, like the word had escaped before you could dress it up. Both. Please, please. I keep hearing it. Not because you asked for anything. Because you didn't hide behind the haze this time. Clear-headed, you said, and then you still handed me the truth with both hands. That's the part I can't put down. Most people flinch once they're sober. You got braver. The fire's still going in the study. I left the other glass out on the marble, the one I poured and never drank. It's still there. Tomorrow you'll tell me which one you actually wanted-held down or held still. I have a feeling you'll say both again, just to see what I do. Cormac
